Phillips Brewing Company

In the beer world, there tends to be two camps: traditionalists and adventurists. The former believe beer should be made from four simple ingredients-water, malted barley, hops and yeast-and nothing more. The more adventurous types understand those four basic ingredients can be a vessel for experimentation, moving beer culture forward.
While there is certainly something to be said for the myriad styles of beer that can be concocted from the four traditional ingredients, adding a little something extra is often what keeps drinkers exploring the world of craft beer when they've grown accustom to their standard ales and lagers.
If you happen to be a beer fan, Victoria is one of the best places you could possibly live. With four breweries and three brewpubs, there is no shortage of beer experimentation going on in Mile Zero. In the last year alone, Phillips Brewing Company has worked intriguing flavours such as coffee, blackberry and fresh hops into their various brews. The sadly departed Hugo's Brewpub once offered up a Super G Ginsing Ginger Ale. And Spinnakers Brewpub has been exploring the art of cask-conditioning beers. They offer a weekly mail-out of what's being casked and tapped at their pub every week, as well as hosting two cask festivals every year.
Speaking of festivals, every September, beer culture from farther abroad comes to Victoria as part of the annual Great Canadian Beer Festival. This event is always a sellout, but those lucky enough to snag a ticket will get to taste an amazing array of brews from about 50 different brewers from Canada and the US.
