Lully's Sandwich Bar - Restaurant Review No.5

I've been driving past Lully's Sandwich Bar for a couple of weeks now meaning to stop in and each time I seem to talk myself out of it. Growing up in Toronto, I have had my share of great kosher deli sandwiches and each time a Victoria deli has purported to have Montreal smoked meat or corned beef, I've been left with a stacked heap of disappointment.
Well, raise your hands and prepare to rejoice people. Lully's is here and their stacked Montreal smoked meat is, dare is say, divine. What am I looking for in world class deli sandwich? Firstly, it must be hot, the light rye (or Black Forest Rye if you prefer) must be fresh and the meat, well, the meat must be moist and succulent. A good smoked meat or corned beef sandwich should have a bit of oil-i-ness which comes from the sliver of fat left on the edge of the brisket.
Skully (the owner) also hand delivered (using tongs of course) a crisp dill pickle to accompany my sandwich. I'm not a big fan of coleslaw but Lully's is slightly tart and all yummy. My pal Tom also had the clam chowder which he reported to be "of good quality" : the clams were not chewy and his arteries did not feel like "they were clogged with cream". I have yet to try the "straight from Coney Island" Nathan's Frankfurters or the Rockenrolla Roast Beef Sandwich with their own hot horseradish mayo. Both sound enticing and I shall try them soon enough.

What else do I like about Lully's? There was great energy on my visit. Skully was enthusiastic and the place had really positive buzz about it. The space is small but cozy and if you're an English soccer fan, you'll feel right at home. We recommend that you check it out. DV gives it our seal of approval.
